We will all agree that gas prices are pretty high these days. Some of us with electric cars and solar panels are glad not to have to spend all this money at the gas pump.
But let’s face it there is a vast majority of drivers that rely on gas fueled vehicles to get around. Chances are gas prices will not be going down anytime soon, but there are things we can do to drive more efficiently in order to burn less gas.
–Another thing to consider is to plan your driving route wisely. Evaluate your arrand list and check google maps to plan your route in the most efficient way.
-Get some exercise, try walking or biking to your destination. When was the last time you ran to the grocery store for a few items? Make it fun. It’s a win-win situation – good for you and the environment.
-Change your driving habits. If you are a heavy footer, you may want to work on accelerating gently instead. Keeping a steady speed will make a huge difference. Driving at high speeds contributes to higher gas consumption. Your most efficient driving speed is between 30 and 50 miles per hour. Anticipate stops and try to coast rather than brake to decelerate. Look ahead and know what is coming. Driving this way will allow you to keep a more steady speed and will make for much safer driving.
–Remove unnecessary weight from your vehicle. If you just purchased a few bags of soil for your gardening project, make sure you remove it from your car as soon as possible rather than driving around with all that extra weight.
-Remove bike or roof racks. Did you just get back from a bike ride or camping trip and still have that rack on the top of your roof? I know it’s a lot of work, but it is wise to get it off your car as soon as possible. You would be surprised how much that additional wind resistance adds to your gas consumption.
-Check your tire pressure. Proper tire pressure plays a big role in gas efficiency. If your tires are underinflated you will burn more fuel. At Bullitt Automotive your Car Repair Tempe Shop we are always happy to check the pressure in your tires and adjust it as needed. It is recommended that you do this once a month and especially when there are significant changes in outdoor temperature. Maintaining proper tire pressure will also prolong the life of your tires.
-Try not to use your AC. Yes, I know this tip might work somewhere where summer temperatures are not as brutally hot as in the Valley of the Sun, but you may keep that in mind during cooler months.
We hope that these tips help you make smart driving decisions and save you money at the gas pump. Remember that proper maintenance of your vehicle will also add to fuel efficiency.
