Transmission Repair

The transmission in your car is one of the more expensive parts to repair. To understand what the role of your transmission is, think of the gears on your bicycle. Just like the gears on your bicycle transfer the power from your pedaling feet to the wheels, your transmission transfers the power from the engine to the wheels in your car.

Types of transmission systems

Front-wheel drive – this type of two-wheel drive system is the most basic system. It is composed of the fewest parts, and is the easiest to maintain. This type of system is most common in sedans, coupes, minivans. It can also be found in some light trucks and SUVs. Vehicles with front-wheel drive are cost-effective to purchase. The downside is that your front tires will wear faster than the rear because they do all the accelerating, steering and braking. With this said it is very important to rotate your tires on an annual basis.

Rear-wheel drive – this two-wheel drive system is found mostly in sports cars and in two-wheel drive trucks. Vehicles with this type of transmission offer quick acceleration and braking as well as handle better around the corners. Vehicles with this type of system are more expensive to purchase. They are more fun to drive, but do not perform well in ice and snow.

Four-wheel drive – this drive system is designed for trucks and SUVs that carry heavy loads, tow cargo and need to perform in off-road conditions. It offers great traction, power and safe driving in adverse weather conditions. It is however more costly to buy and maintain, not to mention higher gas consumption.

Part-time four-wheel drive – with this system you can choose what you want depending on driving conditions. You can choose two-wheel drive during normal driving conditions, and switch to four-wheel drive during wet, snowly, icy conditions, and when towing a heavy load.
